Battle at the Boat 123 – Fight Report
Battle at the Boat 123 took place at Emerald Queen Casino on September 7, 2019. The evening
consisted of six professional boxing matches. The first four bouts of the night were scheduled for
4 rounds, with the semi-main event set for 5 rounds. The main event was scheduled for 10
rounds.
Luis Alvarado v. William Parra-Smith – 130 lbs
The first bout of the night saw Luis Alvarado get the victory via unanimous decision in his
professional debut against William Parra-Smith. The southpaw Alvarado claimed the decision
with 39-37 scores on all three judges’ scorecards. It was an impressive showing for Alvarado
considering that Parra-Smith entered the fight with six professional bouts under his belt, with
knockout victories in his two most recent contests.
The first round saw Alvarado use an effective jab and he also landed a hard left hook to the body.
This was clearly Alvarado’s round as he was far more active and landed the more telling blows.
The second round was likely Parra-Smith’s as he opened aggressively and landed a good left
hook to the chin of Alvarado. While both fighters did good body work in this round, Parra-Smith
closed the round with a flush left hand to the head. The third round saw Alvarado far more active
early and landing an effective three-punch combination with two body shots finished off with a
punch to the head. Both fighters landed quite a few body punches in this round, as well as
throughout this grueling fight.
Sua Tuani v. Nick Coughran – 200 lbs
Making his professional boxing debt, MMA veteran Sua Tuani put on an impressive
performance by scoring a knockout at the 2:04 mark of the First Round. The result was likely no
surprise to local combat sports enthusiasts familiar with Tuani, as he had previously earned the
CageSport MMA Heavyweight title in December 2018 with a vicious knockout punch of
champion Richard Foster.
Tuani put relentless pressure on Coughran from the opening bell, showing big power and a clear
speed advantage. Tuani landed a nice uppercut early and followed with a straight right that
wobbled Coughran. Tuani landed another punishing uppercut prior to the finishing sequence.
The knockout punch came with Tuani lunging forward and landing a devastating uppercut to the
body.
Hamilton Ash v. Willie Gomez – 144 lbs
Willie “El Gallito” Gomez improved his professional record to 2-0 with a hard fought win in a
close contest with Hamilton Ash. The bout was an interesting clash of styles with Gomez having
a clear speed advantage, but Ash possessing more power. Gomez was more active early in the
fight, but Ash came on late with more activity as his power shots appeared to wear down Gomez
toward the end of the fight.
Gomez got off to a fast start in Round 1 with more activity and landing cleaner shots. However,
Round 2 appeared to be for Ash, who at one point landed a seven punch flurry that went
unanswered by Gomez. The third round was very close, as Ash was the aggressor and pushed
forward. But Gomez landed one of the best punches of the fight with a clean right hook counter
late in the round. Gomez also had opened up a cut over Ash’s right eye during the round that
likely influenced the judges’ scoring. Round 4 saw some of the best action of the entire evening
as both fighters were very active and landed a high number of blows.
From this writer’s perspective, this was the closest fight of the night with some of the best back-
and-forth action. Ash perhaps should have been given the nod in a very close contest. However,
the judges scored it a majority decision for Gomez, with one judge scoring it a draw at 38-38,
and the other two favoring Gomez at 40-36 and 39-37. The crowd greeted the judge’s decision
and scorecards with loud boos.
Nick Mills v. Dylan Potter – Heavyweight
Nick “The Nightmare” Mills is nothing if not one intense and scary dude. Mills improved his
professional record to 2-0 in a split decision victory (39-36, 39-36, 37-38) over Dylan Potter.
Mills brought heavy pressure in the opening frame of this Heavyweight tilt. Mills threw caution
to the wind and hammered Potter with heavy looping hooks. A four-punch combination of
alternating hooks by Mills resulted in a knockdown of Potter in the First Round.
Potter, however, showed good heart despite appearing to open the second round on somewhat
shaky legs. Mills landed a bid left hook early. Mills then cornered Potter and aggressively
pounded Potter with punishing shots. Potter had a nice moment with a straight right hand
connecting, but Mills fought back to seize any momentum that Potter might have taken.
However, by the end of the round, Mills aggression appeared to have taken a bit of a toll on his
gas tank.
Round 3 saw Mills continue to press forward despite clear fatigue, and Potter started to increase
his output. Potter scored with a nifty lead uppercut. The round saw some furious action late with
several hooks landing for Potter. Both fighters had their moments in the fourth and final round.
But Mills appeared to edge out the fight in the final frame with a bit more activity and seemingly
landing the cleaner blows. Late in the round Potter showed great heart with a long flurry of
punches. Not to be outdone, Mills finished the fight by smashing Potter late with a flurry of
unanswered punches.
Andres Abarca v. Kevin Davila – 143 lbs
The night’s semi-main event saw Kevin Davila earn a unanimous decision over Andres Abarca
in a five round bout. Abarca pushed forward early in the fight, leading with his jab. Abarca
landed a nice uppercut in the opening round, as well as some good body punches in the clinch.
But as he would do throughout the fight, Davila would periodically dart in and throw body shots
in tight range as he sought to negate Abarca’s height and reach advantage. Davila had one of his
best moments in the third round when he landed a good body hook counter off of a missed jab by
Abarca. Abarca had some nice moments in the fifth and final round, landing two good hooks to
the body in the clinch, and later a straight right at distance. However, it was Davila who was
pushing the action late in the fight.
Manuel Monteiro v. Cris Reyes – 140 lbs
Both fighters entered the main event of the event with perfect 7-0 records. Monteiro had won all
of his contests by knockout, with Reyes winning all but one of his fights by KO. It took until the
tenth round, but Reyes continued his momentum with a knockout courtesy of a steaming right
hand. Reyes had previously knocked Monteiro down in the tenth round.
The bout started off with a fast pace in Round 1. Both fighters landed good shots to the body.
Throughout the fight, both fighters’ strategy was seemingly to target their opponents’ body with
punishing hooks in tight. However, it was Reyes fought the vast majority of this fight moving
forward. Reyes’s forward pressure clearly began to take a toll on Monteiro as Reyes started
taking clear control of the fight in Round 6. It was in that round that Reyes landed a huge right
hand that was the most significant blow of the fight to that point.
Round 7 saw Reyes relentlessly stalking a clearly tired Monteiro. By this point, Reyes had
opened a significant cut on Monteiro’s mouth, drawing a steady stream of blood. Round 8 saw
Reyes open very aggressively as he appeared to be searching for the finish. Monteiro showed
good heart in the round as he tried to counter. Round 9 offered more of the same, but Monteiro
once more showed heart and a bit of life late in the round as he landed a combination of 5-6 body
shots.
Reyes scored the two knockdowns in Round 10, with the second one coming off a violent right
hand that delivered him the knockout victory at 1:47 of the round.
