Combat Games MMA held another installment of its amateur MMA events with Fight Quest 3 on Saturday, October 16, 2021. Twelve fights took place on the card, eleven MMA fights plus the Kickboxing main event. The following is a recap of all of the bouts.

Ronnie Boutilier vs. Tyler Pushckor – 185 lbs – Kickboxing Main Event

Ronnie Boutilier displayed some impressive grappling as he spent the vast majority of the fight in top position on the way to a dominant victory over Tyler Pushckor. The judges scored the bout 29-27, 30-26, and 30-25.

Round 1 saw Boutilier score an early takedown. Boutilier dominated the round with a couple of minutes of top control. Pushckor did well to limit the damage he took, but Boutilier was able to land a few decent left hands from top position.

Round 2 saw Boutilier shoot for an early takedown before any strikes were landed by the fighters. Pushckor initially was able to defend the takedown as Boutilier pushed his opponent up against the cage. Boutilier then displayed his impressive strength by lifting Pushckor in the air and finishing the takedown. Pushckor at one point in the round appeared to have a fairly tight triangle-armbar attack locked in. But Boutilier did well to defend by using brute force and lifting Pushckor into the air before dropping him to the mat, shaking off the triangle in the process. Boutilier then landed the best strike of the fight, while standing over the grounded Pushckor, as Boutilier hammered Pushckor with a right hand. Boutilier controlled almost the entire round from top position.

Pushckor opened the third round with a nice jab. About one minute into the final round, Boutilier scored the final takedown of the fight. Boutilier was able to control Pushckor for the rest of the round.

Andy Nelson vs. Nathan Young Clause – 155 lbs – Co-Main Event

Andy Nelson bounced back from a tough first round to score an impressive TKO comeback victory against Nathan Young Clause just 18 seconds into Round 2.

Early in Round 1 Nelson secured a takedown as Clause looked to wrap up a guillotine choke. Clause was able to quickly work his way back to the feet and pressed Nelson up against the cage with a front headlock. From the headlock position Clause landed a couple of hard knees on Nelson. Clause showed some really nice striking skills in the round as he landed several nice low kicks and also landed several sharp jabs. Clause was seemingly landing jabs and inside low kicks at will late in the round. This was clearly Clause’s round as he landed more strikes and more effectively.

Round 2, however, was a different story as Nelson quickly landed some big strikes that knocked Clause to the mat. Nelson then wasted no time as he aggressively sought, and secured, the finish via ground strikes. This was an impressive comeback victory for Nelson as he lost the first round by a significant margin only to get the quick finish early in the next round.

Seth Baugher vs. Ali Al Hamdany – 145 lbs

Seth Baugher won a unanimous decision against Ali Al Hamdany by scores of 29-28, 29-27, and 30-27.

Round 1 opened with Baugher scoring on a nice outside leg kick. Al Hamdany landed a big head kick early in the round. Baugher somewhat surprisingly seemed to eat the strike well. Baugher then scored with a nice outside low kick and two nice punches on the inside after the fighters entered the clinch. Much of Round 1 was spent with the fighters tussling in the clinch without many strikes. However, Baugher did land four or five nice hooks from the clinch late in the round. Baugher closed the round by landing a big overhand right.

Baugher landed another big overhand right early in Round 2. Al Hamdany then shot for and secured a single leg takedown. Baugher looked quickly for a guillotine choke, but Al Hamdany was able to quickly pull out of the attempt. Baugher then was able to get back to his feet and immediately slammed Al Hamdany to the ground for a takedown of his own. Al Hamdany was able to quickly get back to standing. Baugher scored several times late in the round with right hooks. Al Hamdany finished the round with a nice body kick.

Round 3 was largely spent in the clinch. Baugher landed much more frequently, and the more effective strikes, from the clinch. In particular, Baugher landed some effective knees from the clinch. Baugher landed a big left hand off of a clinch break late in the round that hurt Al Hamdany and had him backing up. Despite taking a lot of punishment, Al Hamdany showed toughness late as he closed out the final round with three big left hands.

Jacob Moran vs. Gage Ryan – 205 lbs

Jacob Moran had the most impressive victory of the night in a highly entertaining clash with Gage Ryan. Moran secured the TKO stoppage at 1:23 of Round 3.

Moran displayed some impressive striking throughout. But his best weapon was a vicious outside right leg kick that he repeatedly slammed into the outside of Ryan’s left knee. Moran hurt Ryan badly numerous times with that strike. By the second round Ryan’s movement was compromised and you could see deep bruising caused by the strikes.

In Round 1, Moran employed his kick heavy strategy early and often. Ryan, holding his hands low throughout most of the fight, scored with a nice lunging jab. After the fighters entered the clinch, Moran scored with a couple of big knees to the body. However, as the fighters broke the clinch Ryan landed a big right hand. Moran then went back to work with his kicks, a couple of which appeared to slam hard into the side of Ryan’s knee. The round finished with a nice exchange as Moran landed two big left hands, with Ryan firing back a couple nice shots of his own.

Moran opened Round 2 with another hard outside low kick, followed by a big punch. Moran landed several more vicious low kicks, one of which scored a knockdown. As Ryan was getting back to his feet, Moran connected with a hard right hand. After another five or six hard outside low kicks, Ryan began limping badly. Ryan, however, showed great heart and toughness as he fought through the nasty leg kicks. Moran also scored with a hard 1-2 late in the round, but as Ryan was backing up he landed a hard right hand counter of his own. Despite taking a ton of punishment, Ryan still appeared dangerous with his hands deep into Round 2. Ryan landed a hard jab late in the round.

To start Round 3, Moran landed two more hard outside right low kicks. After landing several hard punches, Moran shot for and secured a takedown that would lead to the ending sequence of the fight. With Ryan badly hurt all it took was another seven or eight punches from top position to secure the finish

Frank Rangel vs. Nicasio Ortiz – 145 lbs

This highly entertaining featherweight bout saw Frank Rangel controlling the first two rounds, before Nicasio Ortiz mounted a comeback in the final round. All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for a unanimous decision for Rangel.

Rangel displayed some nice standup skills in this fight, occasionally switching his stance. He utilized an effective jab, taking advantage of his long frame and considerable reach advantage in this fight. Rangel also showed some nice footwork during the bout. On defense he was able to use his movement skills to evade, while also putting himself in advantageous position to strike.

In Round 1, Rangel wasted no time landing a couple of nice jabs. He followed that with a nice inside low kick. Ortiz had trouble throughout the first two rounds of the fight with the reach disadvantage as he struggled to get inside. Early in Round 1 Ortiz charged forward only to be met with a stiff jab that halted his charge. During Ortiz’s next attempt charging in, Rangel landed a couple of nice counterstrikes. However, Ortiz’s subsequent advance resulted in a big right hand. Rangel ended the round with a couple of nice low kicks. Ortiz was squinting hard with his left eye as it was showing some significant swelling.

Round 2 saw Rangel start early with a head kick attempt that resulted in a takedown for Ortiz. But Rangel was able to quickly work his way back to standing, denying Ortiz any ground control time. Rangel did some more nice work with his kicks this round, but Ortiz began to have a little more success with his blitzes forward as he landed a couple nice right hands after charging in and getting on the inside.

Rangel opened Round 3 by landing a nifty spinning back kick. Rangel also scored early with a lunging jab, a technique that he had success with several times in the fight. However, this would prove to be Ortiz’s round as he was much more successful getting inside of Rangel’s reach and landing effective punches.

Aman Anwar vs. Brian Sheard – 125 lbs

The seventh bout of the night between Aman Anwar and Brian Sheard ended in a majority draw with one judge scoring the bout 29-28 for Sheard, while the other two judges scored the fight 28-28.

Anwar started the fight well as he scored early from the clinch with multiple knee strikes followed by a couple right hands to the head. With the fight going to the clinch for a second time, both fighters exchanged knee strikes. Sheard then scored two impressive takedowns by lifting Anwar high in the air with slam takedowns. Anwar was able to quickly work his way back to the feet after the first takedown, but Sheard once more lifted Anwar into the air before completing the slam. Sheard looked for an Anaconda or D’arce position but was unable to convert. Sheard was then able to land quite a few punches from top position near the end of the first round.

Round 2 started with a wild exchange of punches and kicks from both fighters. From the clinch Anwar was able to secure a takedown. Sheard did well to defend from bottom position, at one point working a triangle submission attempt. While Anwar controlled Sheard from top position for a large portion of the round, Sheard defended well to avoid damage.

Anwar scored early in Round 3 with a nice right hand. The fighters then entered the clinch with Sheard scoring a takedown. Prior to Anwar working his way back to the feet, Sheard landed five or six punches from top position doing some damage. After Anwar worked his way back to the feet, Sheard attempted a standing guillotine choke.

Michael Wells defeats Morgan Fegan by triangle choke at 2:24 of Round 2.

In Round 1, Fegan pressured Wells up against the cage with strikes before landing a takedown. Wells, however, displayed good defensive jiu-jitsu from his back as after a minute of control time Fegan was able to do little damage from top position. Fegan then briefly stood up over Wells before re-entering Wells’ guard. Wells continued to tie up Fegan and do a good job of defending from bottom position. Fegan landed a couple of nice punches from top position late in the round, but Wells defended with a triangle choke attempt.

As Round 2 started the fighters traded low kicks. The fight then went to the ground early in the round as Wells appeared to slip. From top position, Fegan was able to land quite a few punches to Wells’ ribs. Wells then went to work on his submission game. Fegan was able to work his way out of Wells’ initial triangle choke attempt. But Wells was persistent in his attack as he secured the triangle choke submission off his back  near the end of the round.

Gunnar Franz vs. Alex Bickford – 155 lbs

Gunnar Franz scored an impressive submission victory over Alex Bickford, overcoming a bit of adversity as Franz was knocked down at the start of the fight by the southpaw Bickford with a big left hand. From top control, Bickford worked Franz from the middle of the cage over to the fence, scooting his opponent there. Once there Franz cranked a hard kimura from bottom position that secured the submission victory at 1:30 of Round 1.

David Quintero had some nice moments early in Round 1 scoring with a couple hard body kicks. Quintero shot for an early takedown attempt that Wishon defended with a standing guillotine attempt. Quintero was able to work his way out of the submission attempt and hit Wishon with a nice knee from the clinch. Wishon was then able to complete a takedown. Wishon went straight to side control, but Quintero immediately turned belly down as he quickly worked his way back to standing. From the clinch Wishon landed a couple of knee strikes before scoring a single leg takedown. But Quintero was able to once more quickly work his way back to the feet. However, Wishon was able to get another takedown and quickly worked his way to mount position where he landed a handful of punches that appeared to do minimal damage.

Round 2 started with the fighters trading some hard punches in the middle of the cage. Wishon didn’t waste much time attempting another takedown as he was able to convert from the body lock. Quintero was able to quickly reverse, however, before the fight returned to standing. Wishon then continued his wrestling heavy gameplan as he secured another takedown up against the cage. Wishon again was able to transition to mount, but was unable to do much damage from the position. Quintero unsurprisingly appeared exhausted at the end of the round as Wishon spent a good portion of the round in top position.

Round 3 was more of the same as Wishon scored an early takedown and spent the majority of the round in top position. Wishon, while unable to finish the fight, this round scored with more ground strikes as he was able to land with short hammerfist style punches to the ribs and head of Quintero.

Chris Ungerecht vs. Conner McAdams – 135 lbs

Conner McAdams earned a TKO victory at 1:10 of Round 2 in the opening bout of the night. Chris Ungerecht scored early in Round 1 with some nice low kicks. However, McAdams seemed to get Ungerecht’s timing down early in the round as he landed a hard 1-2 counterpunch combination off of an Ungerecht kick. Ungerecht was able to score an early takedown in the round, but McAdams was able to quickly work his way back up to standing. Ungerecht was able to briefly establish standing back control, but McAdams flashed some nice striking when he hit Ungerecht with an elbow as he worked his way out of the position. McAdams then followed up with more clean striking as he followed up a nice front kick with a hard 1-2 punching combination up against the cage. Ungerecht was able to score another takedown in the round but after McAdams once more worked his way back to the feet and the rest of the opening round was largely played out in the clinch.

About one minute into Round 2, McAdams landed several nice punches against the fence that clearly hurt Ungerecht as he appeared unstable on his feet. McAdams then went on the attack and landed more punches along the fence. McAdams landed more than ten unanswered punches before the referee (who should have stopped the bout much earlier) finally called an end to the bout.
