On Monday, June 29, Happenstance FGC broadcast another round of its inaugural Street Fighter league. What is Happenstance FGC? It’s a fighting game community that is currently hosting its first online Street Fighter V tournament. Happenstance FGC provides esports programming and competitions online and in-person.

The following is a quick roundup of the action and results of the June 29 broadcast. That broadcast (and all future broadcasts and past recordings) can be seen on the Happenstances FGC Facebook page here.

The league is scheduled for three broadcasts a week: Monday, Thursday and Friday. The start time is 8 pm central time for all broadcasts.

The league is currently in its round-robin phase. All players play one another during the round-robin portion of the tournament. After the round-robin phase is complete, the top 8 players will compete in a double-elimination tournament to determine the league champion.

The match winners are determined by the first player to win two games in a best of three games format. As with other Street Fighter V tournaments, only the losing payer of a game can change characters for the next game, if the match has not yet been decided. The winning player of a game must keep the same character in the next game of a match.

The June 29 broadcast featured 11 total matches.

Here’s a recap of the fifth match of the evening. The fifth match was chosen to be highlighted here because it was a match that featured both players changing characters after losing a game. The match was between Ultra Diamond level player Zeromex and Master level player RASEC. In the first game, Zeromex played Kolin, while RASEC chose to play M. Bison. Both players came out of the gate with an aggressive, attacking style. RASEC got out to an early lead and had his opponent’s health meter down to 1/3, when Zeromex made a nice comeback. With both players having around 1/3 health left, RASEC used intelligent play by first going on the attack, then dodging Kolin’s counter-attack before RASEC won the round. In the finishing sequence RASEC had M. Bison hit a sweet crush counter knee strike as Kolin charged forward. Zeromex used Kolin to take a lead very early in the second round as RASEC employed a more defensive strategy. But RASEC then decided to go more on the offensive and took the round over in what became a relatively straightforward victory.

Having lost the first game 2 rounds to 0, Zeromex decided to exercise the losing player’s option to switch characters. Zeromex switched from Kolin to Balrog. His decision paid dividends as he used Balrog to win the second game and even the match at 1 game apiece. Zeromex used Balrog quite effectively as he won the first two rounds to take the game. In the first round he employed a very offensive strategy and in the second round moved deftly between offense and defense to sweep the game 2 rounds to 0.

Having seen his opponent’s character switch pay off, RASEC decided to use the losing player’s option to switch by swapping out M. Bison for Zangief. The first round was relatively even until RASEC took over late and closed out the round when he used Zangief to score the knockout blow by grabbing and throwing Balrog the ground with an over the shoulder and twisting hybrid judo throw/wrestling slam. RASEC stylishly finished the match in the second round and took the victory by employing the Siberian Express EX special attack. An exciting finish to a strategic match! Bravo to both players for employing the character switch to great effect!

The first round was a bit back-and-forth and was evenly matched until both players had about 1/3 of their health gauge left when RASEC
