Khabib “the Eagle” Nurmagomedov puts his UFC lightweight championship belt on the line against interim lightweight champion Justin “the Highlight” Gaethje.

Many consider the 28-0 Nurmagomedov to be the most dominant force in the UFC. But Gaethje is considered to be perhaps his toughest challenge to date. Gaethje certainly believes he will win this fight and has the skill set to do it.

Round 1

Inside leg kick lands for Gaethje early. Gaethje follows with a big overhand right. Quick jab lands for The Eagle. Outside leg kick by Gaethje. Nurmagomedov looks for the takedown but is stuffed by Gaethje. Nurmagomedov presses forward aggressively as he lands a couple shots. But Gaethje fires back with a big right hand. Nurmagomedov with relentless pressure as Gaethje appears to be tiring somewhat late in the round. Front kick lands to the body for Nurmagomedov and he follows with a nice 1-2. Khabib keeps pressing forward and putting strikes on Gaethje. Gaethje lands a beautiful combination started with a body shot and finishing with a left hook up top. Big outside leg kick by Gaethje. Big counter left hook for Gaethje followed by an outside leg kick. Khabib shoots a double leg and gets the takedown with 40 seconds left in the round. Khabib takes mount and looks for an armbar as the round closes.

Nice left hook by Gaethje followed by a Nurmagomedov leg kick. Another big leg kick by Gaethje briefly throws Nurmagomedov off balance. Inside leg kick for Gaethje. Khabib with a solid front kick. Nurmagomedov with a takedown off of a Gaethje low kick. Khabib quickly takes mount and produces the tap via triangle choke.
