Local PNW boxer Victor “El Tornado” Morales has been honored as Golden Boy Promotion’s Prospect of the Year. Morales, a native of Vancouver Washington, earned the honor as a result of three exciting fights in 2021.
The rising 24 year old star started 2021 by fighting a much more experienced fighter in the 34 Rodrigo “Gatito” Guerrero. Guerrero, the former IBF Junior Bantamweight Champion, entered that bout with a 26-9-2 record. Morales followed that fight with a TKO over Jose Robles Olvera. Morales then ended his 2021 campaign in an exciting ten-round fight with another undefeated prospect in Rudy Garcia. The fight was for the vacant WBC International Featherweight Title. The fight ended in a draw and both fighters have expressed interest in running that one back.
Morales comes from a boxing family. His father, who is his head trainer, boxed as a youth. His three brothers also train boxing, and his mother is a USA Boxing official. Coming from a boxing family, Morales started training at age 7 and started his amateur career as a an 8-year old. Morales had extensive amateur experience, compiling a record of 118-12. High profile fighters Morales fought during his amateur days include three fights with Shakur Stevenson. Stevenson is, of course, the reigning WBO Junior Lightweight champion, as well as the former WBO Featherweight champion. Morales also fought 2020 Olympic Silver medalist Duke Ragan when both were amateurs.
Morales is currently 15-0-1 as he looks to 2022 as the year he makes a big name for himself. Morales describes himself as a boxer-puncher who prefers to box but can also punch. Others have lauded Morales for his use of the jab, boxing IQ, footwork, and speed. By all accounts Morales is mature beyond his years. Golden Boy matchmaker Roberto Diaz is on record saying Morales has all the tools to be a star. Indeed, 2022 appears to be a big year for this rising PNW boxing star.
