The round-robin phase of Happenstance FGC’s inaugural esports Street Fighter V league continued with another round of exciting play on Thursday, June 18. What is Happenstance FGC? It is a fighting game community that is currently hosting its first online Street Fighter V tournament. Happenstance FGC provides esports programming and competitions online and in-person.
The following is a quick roundup of the action and results of the June 18 broadcast. That broadcast (and all future broadcasts and past recordings) can be seen on the Happenstances FGC Facebook page here.
You can watch the next event on Friday, June 19 at 8 pm central time. The league is scheduled for three broadcasts a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The start time is 8 pm central time for all broadcasts.
The league format has changed somewhat in that all matches are now determined by the player who first wins two games, whereas it was previously the first player to win three games. This best of 3 games format will allow more players to play during each broadcast and should be an exciting improvement to the league.
The June 18 broadcast featured 5 total matches.
Here’s a recap of the first match of the night. The first match featured a player taking advantage of the rule that allows a losing player to change characters in the next game of a match. Only the losing player can change characters, while the winning player must keep the same character for the next game of the match.
The first match of the night paired Omar Kratos versus Rob_Mty. In the first game, Omar Kratos chose to play with Necalli, while Rob_Mty chose Guile. The first round of the first game was a relatively lengthy round as the winner was not determined until Rob_Mty scored the knockout blow with a “fireball” attack with about 20 seconds remaining before time would have expired. The second round of the first game was extremely close and featured an exciting finish as both players had only a tiny fraction of health left before the deciding blow by Omar Kratos tied up the game at one round apiece. This was also a rather long match as only 26 seconds remained in this round. Omar Kratos won the final round of the first game in dramatic fashion as only 8 seconds remained!
Rob_Mty had a good showing in the second game of the match as he won 2 rounds to 1 to even the match at one game all. The third and deciding round was an impressive display as Rob_Mty scored a solid victory by effectively using distance “fireball” attacks. Having lost the second game, Omar Kratos decided to change characters from Necalli to Birdie for the final game that would decide the match. The switch paid dividends as Omar Kratos won in relatively straightforward fashion by a round score of 2-0.
