Jiu-Jitsu OT, a new tournament created by jiu-jitsu legend Eddie Bravo, asks on their Instagram page, “Who can submit who the fastest in two of the best positions in jiu-jitsu? Sixteen of the world’s best featherweights will collide in the ultimate rear-naked choke shootout.” Seattle based jiu-jitsu competitor Austin “Duck Jitsu” Daffron has been selected to compete in this high-profile no-gi jiu-jitsu tournament. The inaugural event will air live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass on Sunday, July 19.

Jiu-Jitsu OT will employ a novel and interesting format as the 16-man tournament does away with regulation time and matches are contested using only the Eddie Bravo Invitational overtime rules. As the Instagram promo states, “No points. No advantages. No judges. And no regulation time.” For those not familiar with EBI overtime rules, a quick summary is provided below.

Jiu Jitsu OT Rules and Format

There is a top and bottom of the round. Each grappler is given the opportunity to attack and defend submissions. The grappler who attacks first (Grappler A) in the top of the round chooses to start either in back control (standard BJJ position where one competitor is put on the back of the other with a seatbelt grip and with hooks in) or attacking in “The Spiderweb” position (standard BJJ armbar position but the person defending has their arms crossed over to defend the attack). After the top of the round ends, Grappler B gets to chose his attacking position and Grappler A defends.

Once there is an escape or submission in the top of the round, that half of the round is over. If Grappler A secured a submission in the top of the round, Grappler B has to secure a submission faster than A in the bottom of the round or he loses the match. If at the top of the round A did not secure a submission but B escaped, then the bottom of the round starts. If B then secures a submission, B is the winner. If B does not secure a submission, and A escapes just as B had escaped earlier, then the fastest to escape is declared the winner.

If neither grappler submits or escapes, another round of overtime is contested to determine the winner.
